Have you heard of Type 2 fun?

Turns out there are 3 types of fun.

Type 1 – this is the fun you have and you know you’re having it. Good old fashion fun. Having a tasty meal, running through a sprinkler on a hot day’s run, playing that game where you’re smiling, and your opponent is too.

Type 3 – plainly speaking, nothing about this is fun. It’s not fun during, or after. No one likes Type 3.

So what about Type 2?

This is the arduous hike you thought was going to be easy, but you’re rewarded with an incredible view – and blisters.

This is the sweaty, difficult exercise class that you just wanted to be over – but later loved the challenge.

This is that game, in the cold rain, with heavy wet cleats, a rain coat that was wet on the inside and a Frisbee that was so slippery. Where the opposition proved to be quite skilled and you couldn’t wait to get back to your warm hotel room with chips and beer. And you can still tell the detailed story of that terrible day in Boston.

Type 2 isn’t fun during – but it’s proving to be (I think) the best overall.

Type 2 fun provides us:

  • increased resilience with the proof that we can overcome challenges
  • a self-confidence boost and up-levels our sense of pride
  • pushes us beyond our preconceived limits and provides perspective on our strengthes and weaknesses – a chance to learn more about ourselves
  • memories, great stories, bragging rights 😉

What type 2 fun will you plan for your next workout or adventure?

Here’s to all the bragging rights coming our way!

....

I originally wrote this blog as a newsletter 2 weeks before my due date for my first baby. I was gearing up for some solid Type 2 fun - some may call it "labour".  Now as a new mom, I can honestly say, that indeed, I love Type 2 fun.

And to all the soon-to-be-moms out there, I wish you the best Type 2 fun and all the bragging rights too!
